“That was when I fell in love with electronic music” - Salomé Le Chat interview
Salomé Le Chat is a DJ and producer from Paris with a versatile style that spans house, techno and disco. She brings her diverse influences together in her electrifying sets, and her punchy, club-ready releases on renowned labels like Cuttin’ Headz and Bambossa. Her music has taken her all over the world and she’s no stranger to [UNVRS]. in 2025, Salomé made her debut at [UNVRS], the DJ Mag #1 Club in the World, and has returned to play twice in 2026 already, at ANTS DAY & NIGHT and at Peggy Gou’s Midnight Lobster Club. This Wednesday 29 July she returns to Ibiza to play Jamie Jones’s Paradise at [UNVRS].
We interviewed Salomé Le Chat to talk about French hip hop, Daft Punk, crate-digging, and her upcoming set.
Hi Salomé. So, where are you from and how did it shape your sound and journey?
I'm from Paris. I was born and raised there. Electronic music is a very big draw in France. When I was in primary school and middle school we heard a lot of electronic music on the radio and on TV. We had Daft Punk, we had Busy P, we had Justice, Bob Sinclar, Martin Solveig. Electronic music is a big cultural thing in France!
Of course. French hip hop was big during that time too.
Yeah. The first things that I really loved listening to were hip hop and R&B. French rap was massive there at the end of the ‘90s. You’d have stuff with MC Solaar and Missy Elliott. We had Wu-Tang with IAM, there was a crossover between France and the States, which was really cool at that time. I still listen to a lot of hip hop.
Was there a moment you remember first falling in love with dance music?
There was a shift when I saw Daft Punk’s music videos. The manga era with the Japanese artists and before that all the Homework music videos were sick. I loved watching music videos when I was young and that was a first step. My mom was also listening to a lot of electronic music. She listened to Air and Daft Punk, so obviously that got me into it.
Then, one of my best friends took me to Ibiza for the first time after we graduated. That’s how I discovered the minimal sound, deep house and stuff we just couldn't hear on the radio. That was when I fell in love with this music, for sure.
Wow, so you had one of those Ibiza epiphany moments?
Yes. I remember there were people from every age group, from 18 years old to people in their 50s. It really felt like a new community for me.
Can you tell us about your approach to making music?
There are two ways I do it. It's either I don't want to listen to anything at all. Sometimes listening to what DJs play nowadays can affect what you're producing. So sometimes to make your own music, I feel like you need to be locked in and not listen to music for 10 solid days, or two weeks. That’s when you become a little bit more experimental. Or I listen to things from back in the day, like hip hop, funk, or disco. I might get the bassline or a synth, and then I play with it in Ableton and sometimes randomly I can find something.
Ibiza was a big part of you getting interested in electronic music. What’s your relationship with the island like now?
What’s still so special about Ibiza is that you can listen to every genre, and you can go from really underground parties to the top DJs. I think that’s pretty incredible.
So you’ve played [UNVRS] before. Earlier this year Peggy Gou and at ANTS DAY & NIGHT. What's it like playing the venue?
This year I have really enjoyed it. When I played last year in such a big room, I was really impressed, but my ears needed to adjust to the size of the place. I was opening such a big room and it’s harder than when the room is full. This year I felt way more comfortable. People came early, which was really nice, but I could do my own thing.
What’s your relationship with Jamie Jones and Paradise like? Have you done much together?
It's my third time playing Paradise. Jamie is one of my favourite DJs. He's a huge inspiration and I love Jamie because he's very versatile. I’ve seen him playing techno, tech house, deep house, disco. He's one of the ultimate DJs and I used to work for Paradise back in the day. I love this party and I love the name; Paradise!
What can people expect from your set this week?
It's a groovy party. So I'll play groovy stuff, unreleased stuff, also stuff that I've been playing for a long time. It’s good to have a mix between music from upcoming talents and music from back in the day.
What’s your favourite song to open your set at the minute and why?
It always changes with my mood, but I love Candidate. I play lots of his music.
What’s another song you love playing in your sets at the minute and why?
I cannot wait to play my new song, it's called “Never Enough”. It's gonna come out on Slacker, which is Seth Troxler’s new label. It’s coming out on Friday 31 July. So yeah, for sure, I'm gonna play it and [UNVRS] is the best room to play that track. It's a track made for a big room.
Where is a good place for people to start if they’re new to you?
A set that represents me is the set I did at Robert Johnson. It’s more of the stuff I listen to at home, or with a smaller group of people, which is different to the music I might play in a big room. You can listen to it on SoundCloud.
What else is going on for you at the minute?
I just released a track on DFTD, the Defected sub-label. That was a re-edit of “Contemplation”, the King Britt version. I was very excited about that. I'm going to release a lot of new music, and lots of music I'm singing on. I’m doing vocals on “Never Enough”, well, more like talking. I also have this artist called Azaad, who did a remix of that song. That’s a bit more minimal and I'm very excited to put it out too.
And finally, why do you DJ?
I just love looking for new music. My passion is to look for music. I'm a geek. I love going on the computer, going onto websites that nobody knows, looking through folders and folders. I love going on a music hunt, then playing the tracks that I find in my sets. This is what I love about DJing.
